Blood Oranges

My First Blood Oranges
I’m get exciting because this is the first year my Dwarf Blood Orange Tree has fruit… It seems Blood Oranges are about to get a whole lot more attention now that HBO is merchandising their show TRUE BLOOD with what they’re calling “A Real Blood Orange Beverage,” check out the Tru Blood Beverage Site. I definitely love the show but I doubt I’ll be preordering a four pack for $22 with shipping.
My Dwarf Blood Orange Tree is of the Moro Variety which is the most popular as it is the most predictable. The red color of the Blood Orange flesh is brought about by anthocyanin pigments, which also cause the same red coloration in other fruits and vegetables. These are different than lycopene pigments found in pink grapefruit. Check out what Wikipedia has to say about the Blood Orange so you can be a real hipster.
